When Gojira hit the Paris Olympics opening ceremony on July 26th, they brought sheer metal mayhem. In a historic first, the French Titans of Metal made their grand entrance as the very first metal band to ever grace the opening ceremony. And boy, did they go all out.
Although they made history, they also felt the weight of an entire genre on their shoulders. As the first metal band to ever perform such a massive event, they faced the challenge of representing the entire metal community on a global stage. Frontman Joe Duplantier spoke openly about the weight of the responsibility. He and his bandmates were aware that their performance was not just a personal milestone, but a chance to showcase the power and spirit of metal.
The Conciergerie, a former prison/courthouse along the Seine River, was transformed into the ultimate heavy metal stage. Gojira, bathed in fire turned the centuries-old walls into a battleground of sonic fury. For their debut, they chose the track “Ah! Ça Ira”, translating to “it’ll be fine.” A track as bloody as it was brilliant.
Not only is the venue beautiful, but it also holds a grim historical significance. This very venue was where Marie Antoinette was imprisoned before her execution in 1793.

Gojira’s performance was nothing short of a masterpiece. A bloodied, beheaded Marie Antoinette took center stage. The camera focused on her severed head before revealing the band perched upon the castle walls. The hauntingly beautiful performance makes chilling connections to the history of the venue.
The pressure to deliver was intense, but Gojira rose to the occasion. They delivered a performance that will have people talking for years to come. With this groundbreaking performance, Gojira set a new standard for how metal can captivate and inspire on a global scale. As they prepare to tour with Korn and Spiritbox, their Olympic debut will be remembered as a defining moment.
