1. “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” – RAYE
Kicking off the new week with a bang is “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” by record-breaking BRIT Award-winning jazz artist RAYE. Her James Brown rendition fuses soulful vocals with brazen instrumentals and astounding improv solos. The track is part of the 27-year-old’s newest album, Live At Montreux Jazz Festival, which commemorates RAYE’s sensational performance at the 58th annual Switzerland extravaganza. The stage of Montreux has seen artists like Aretha Franklin, Lauryn Hill, Nina Simone and more perform. “Playing Montreux Jazz Festival was one of the greatest musical honours we have ever been granted,” says Raye. “This was the most beautiful day in my memories for myself and my band. A day we will never forget and we wanted to share this moment with a beautiful vinyl for anyone who would care to listen.” The 12″ vinyl can be purchased here today!
2. “Soft Spot” – keshi
Intertwining lo-fi hip-hop with the vulnerabilities of falling in love, Houston-born singer-songwriter keshi shares an intimate new single, “Soft Spot.” The track encapsulates the feeling of being captivated by a lover, weaving layers of upbeat synths, driving rhythms and soaring vocals. It comes off keshi’s latest sophomore album, Requiem, a 13-track emotional rollercoaster that bleeds themes of life, death, love and everything in between. “I named the album after a song on it that’s dedicated to a friend and collaborator, who passed away just over a couple of years ago now,” keshi shares. “In classical music, a requiem is a piece you play when laying someone to rest, and this whole record, the culmination of his and our efforts, is my way of doing that for his memory.”
3. “Give in to you (feat. One True God)” – Rezz & Virtual Riot
Electronic powerhouses Rezz and Virtual Riot have released “Give in to you (feat. One True God),” a hypnotic new single that takes all three artists’ techno finesse to new heights. Rezz, a two-time JUNO-award winning Canadian producer brings his signature midtempo skills to the stage. German dubstep artist and Grammy-nominee Virtual Riot is known for his innovative production styles within the realm of bass music. And One True God laced the piece with the right amount of emotional vocals. The combination of these individual talents create a fully immersive piece that sheds light on surrendering to an irresistible lover.
4. “disconnected” – Penny Bored
Up next is “disconncted,” a dreamy new track by pop rock artist Penny Bored that explores the idea of feeling like an outsider amidst the hustle of everyday life. With scarce layers of ascending instrumentals, Bored’s lyricism yearns for a sense of clarity. “Are you even listening?” they sing wistfully. The track can be found on Bored’s newest album, “I’m Bored!”
“‘I’m Bored!’ is all about navigating your 20s,” shares Penny Bored. “We experience heartbreak, navigate friendships, gossip, and even learn to own up to our own mistakes. This collection of songs breaks down my journey of entering a new phase of adulthood and learning to make the most of it, even if I have to be a little delusional some days to get through it.”
5. “She Loves Me” – Dora Jar
Wrapping up today’s selection is “She Loves Me,” a psychedelic piece by folk-pop existentialist Dora Jar. The song’s lyricism speaks about having conflicted feelings for someone who explicitly shows their love towards you. Jar’s lofty vocals blend with the funky backing instrumentals to create an almost out-of-body feeling. The track can be found on Jar’s newest multi-dimensional album, No Way To Relax When You Are On Fire, out today via Island Records. She has just finished up her Behind The Curtain Tour, which brought Jar to 14 different cities across the U.S.
