On December 3rd, 2021, Garrett Nash – the artist formerly known as gnash – released his new single, “Super Glue.” “Super Glue” sees Nash team up with slimdan for a song about “loving people for who they are,” but it’s about more than just that. It’s also about “accepting who you are while at the same time being grateful for that special someone who keeps you grounded.” This song also squashes some beef between the two artists, which is always a good thing to see.
On the whole, the song is a pretty solid piece of pop music. It’s driven by a guitar with minimal extra instrumentation, and the production is pretty cool. Some decisions are a little confusing, though. The vocals are processed to the point where they don’t fully sound human when there isn’t a harmony being sung. Though that could very well be the point. After all, in a song about trying to understand yourself and only fully recognizing that when looking from someone else’s point of view, it makes perfect sense to have that kind of vocal production.
The instrumentation is incredibly minimalist. There’s the aforementioned guitar, some drums kick in for a little bit, an acoustic guitar and a bass show up, but nothing stays very long except for that primary guitar. This could very well be a metaphor for the lyric “I don’t know how to be anyone but me.” The only thing that stays constant in life is us. Not our personality or likes and dislikes or even our beliefs, but our ideals and general modus operandi. Other people come and go, but we will always have ourselves.
Overall, this is a solid output from Garrett Nash, the artist best known for “i hate u, i love u (feat. Olivia O’Brien),” and slimdan, who has worked with Sasha Sloan and Dillon Francis. I’m curious to see what else they do together, and I’m intrigued by this new direction Garrett Nash is going. It’s got a feel-good vibe that is hard to come by these days, and the production raises some philosophical questions (which is always cool).
