The one and only Florence + the Machine presents to us her highly anticipated, latest album Everybody Scream.

Over the course of five albums, Florence + the Machine has become one of the most notable artists of this generation, creating multiple U.S. and U.K. #1 albums. Moreover, she has won numerous awards with her monumental, sold-out live shows, one-of-a-kind voice and headlined festivals across the globe. In addition, she has collaborated and performed with giants such as The Rolling Stones, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and many more. She also published a book titled “Useless Magic,” full of lyrics, poetry and drawings.

Florence created her newest album Everybody Scream with a close-knit team of talented people such as Mark Bowen, Aaron Dessner and Mitski. After Florence needed lifesaving surgery on the Dance Fever tour, her new course took her down the course of spiritual mysticism, witchcraft and folk horror. As she reached the limits of her body, exploring what it means to be “healed,” she sheds light on the themes of womanhood partnership, aging and dying, lifting the veil of the murky and the mundane on her new album.

An absolute highlight of the album is arguably the track “One Of The Greats.” With nasty guitars and a gloomy atmosphere, the song heavily draws from her near-death experience in 2023. It explores her own mortality while immortalizing herself as one of the greats. In a powerful and emotional segment, she details her reality as a woman in a patriarchal society and industry and what it means having to fight twice as hard.

About the song she describes,

I don’t really know how to explain myself with this one, it was sort of a long poem about the cost of greatness. Who gets to decide what that is? Why do I even want it? Why am I never satisfied?

She continues,

I feel like I die a little bit every time I make a record, and kind of literally nearly died on the last tour. Yet I always dig myself up to try again, always trying to please that one person who doesn’t like it, or finally feel like I made something perfect and I can rest.

Early in my career, I was consistently ridiculed and derided for the bigness of my expression. I was thrust into the spotlight but also told again and again I didn’t deserve it, or that because it wasn’t to their taste it wasn’t good. So maybe this is a 15-year outpouring of frustration. But also, a lot of the lines I just left in because I thought they were funny.

Florence and Bowen from IDLES wrote and recorded the song in one take.

He (Bowen) played the guitar and I just sang it straight from the page. We meant to re-record it but the first take just had this amazing energy.

Aaron Dessner left his signature on the song as well.

Then Aaron Dessner helped us take it to a truly transcendent place. I wanted it to feel like you were disintegrating into nothing at the end. Which is sometimes what the creative process feels to me. Death and resurrection over and over.

Another masterpiece is the incredible song “Sympathy Magic,” which she debuted on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” Co-written and produced with Danny L. Harle and Aaron Dessner, the song released to critical acclaim. With soundscapes that scream emotional liberation, the song is a powerful anthem of vulnerability and rage. It illustrates trauma and what comes after, especially the kind she faced in form of her near-death experience. The track puts things such as worthiness and virtue into perspective, outlining them as conventions that are utterly meaningless in the face of life and death. Alongside the track Florence released an enchanting and otherworldly music video, directed by her long time collaborator Autumn de Wilde.
