On November 4th, British soul duo fika teamed up with songwriter and vocalist Bambie to release the Coffee & Clouds EP, headlined by the track “Heaven or Hell.” The instrumental on this is flawless. It took me at least five listens to even start paying attention to the lyrics because the way every instrument blends together is astounding. The neo-soul drums mixed with the acoustic guitar and the piano flourishes creates something completely sublime.
The lyrics themselves are really good, too. They focus primarily on the act of ignoring potential toxicity when you’re in love. “Heaven or hell/I’m gonna taste it,” sings Bambie. Over this sublimely chill instrumental, this juxtaposition of the lyrics makes the jazzy chord progressions even more eerie. Knowing that something could potentially be dangerous or toxic and still going in headfirst deserves to be soundtracked by something like this, especially when the melody seems to sample “Just The Two Of Us.” It’s a phenomenal song. (Note: That statement applies to both “Just The Two Of Us” and “Heaven or Hell.”)
Check out “Heaven or Hell” below and let us know what you think! fika and Bambie knocked it out of the park on this, and they deserve more recognition.
