“Renegades on Borrowed Time” is a wonderful country-esque single that channels the narrative-driven ballads of old-timey road-trip mixtapes with the inevitable sorrow of Shakespearean tragedies. Permeating this vivid fabric of sound is the sweetness that Ferester never fails to inject in his work, a melody that carries the dour nature of the song into unforgettability.
Entirely written, produced and performed by Spencer O’Grady (the artist behind Ferester), ‘Renegades on Borrowed Time is said to “depict a fictional but tragic love story in which the character has slowly corrupted his partner into being complicit in his life of crime. It is a testament to love’s ability to put blinders on us – when we’re so infatuated with someone that we conveniently disregard glaring red flags. Throughout the journey of the song, the central character realizes what he has done…and inevitably faces the consequences, eventually sacrificing their love so that the female character can be free of his corruption.”
The romantic, tragic lyricism contrasting the almost jaunty melody is greatly reminiscent of other greats such as Mumford & Sons, Hozier, and Noah Kahan, all of whom touch upon this sort of lyrical and melodic marriage of buoyant instrumentals and soul-plumbing introspection in their work. It’s safe to say, after giving “Renegades” a cursory, then a focused listen, that Ferester has understood the assignment: ‘musical catharsis’. This folksy number is sure to both delight and devastate in equal parts.
Ferester is the artist project of Scottish-American indie folk artist Spencer O’Grady. Hailing from the sleepy town of Chapel of Garioch, Aberdeenshire, where snow-capped hills carry the birds’ songs in a magically serene synthesis of peace and nature, Ferester crafts anthems that transport the listener to a similarly infused world of euphoric color and emotion. Blending elements of folk and pop, his upcoming debut EP evokes memories of the best road trip you never had.
