Exclusive Premiere: relatability though a synth-pop lens in “Chill With U”
With the sound of an old film recording, waves of intoxicating synth-pop fuse into the intro of “Chill With U”, where modern and memory merge. It’s a familiar story of reflection and regret as the good memories of the past leaking into the oddities of the present moments. Through electric guitars and keyboard riffs, happiness clouds the inevitable, building into each verse. “Chill With U” is all about that battle between optimism and acceptance, where two people in a failed relationship lose their closeness to one another while knowing they can find something better for themselves.
The lyrics highlight that mutual appreciation between two people, as well as a shared sadness to leave something that was once great behind. With the catchy hook of the chorus, “I wasn’t meant to catch no feelings / you were the one I loved to chill with” contrasted with the overthinking and regret of the verses, it’s a story that’s relatable and real.
The differing tone of each synth line creates a warm bubble of roundness around the song, like an electric fantasy of the past, or the artificial world of happiness the couple has created while knowing they’re not meant for each other. It’s vibrant and catchy, somewhere in the world of Jon Bellion’s “Jungle” mixed with California-club style beats.
The Philadelphia-based musician Fl!p carries titles from multi-instrumentalist, singer, writer, to producer. He’s been previously called “Mayer mixed with 80s pop” and “if Prince and Vulfpeck had a Macedonian baby” by others in the Philly music scene. Tending to incorporate genres of all kinds into his songs, he especially likes including pop, rock, RNB, funk, and jazz influence in what he creates.
