Encountering a “Joker” in CELIIN’s Newest Single

October 27th saw the release of “Joker,” CELIIN’s newest release. Extracting emotions from David Arnold and Hildur Guðnadóttir’s epic compositions, she combines a strong, catchy pop-hook with cheeky brass band vibes and western guitar, in turn making a bizarre and enticing track that can only be described as circus-pop. This follows previous releases such as 2022’s “Carmen,” a song that embodies the fear of growing up and the unsettling personification of jealousy.

When speaking on the inspiration of the song, CELIIN has said as such:

“Have you ever found yourself in a deep state of temptation; willing to place the final card – risking that the house of cards might fall? If you have – you might have encountered a Joker. Like a wildcard they emerge when you least expect it with promises of greener grass, making you fall prey to their otherworldly charm. But be aware: a Joker is a person you can have fun with for one night only; as they seek excitement in numerous partners, beguiling their hopeful admirers to the point of bad decisions.”

“Joker” begins with a theatric keyboard melody, introducing CELIIN’s enticing vocals and her charmingly smooth performance. She goes into details of what being a ‘joker’ entails, how people such as this move through life as cunningly as possible, putting hearts in danger and being the one’s who shifts lives onto paths that is different than what victims may have previously intended. There is clear confidence in the track’s genre fluidity, as it expands on the commonly known ‘filthy glamour universe’ to include heavy swing jazz, especially seen in the chorus. Overall, it can be easily said that if you’re looking for a song that oozes with style while providing a creative message, than this is definitely the song for you.
