A Look into Anonymous Duo, Doublethink’s Single, “Doom Scrolling”

An unidentified and secretive duo, fronted by an American Fulbright researcher and a peacebuilding professional, makes up the project entitled Doublethink. While anonymous, the two met on Soundcloud after finding a likeness and similarity in their politically motivated interests in their musical craft. They have been creating their work since then from the bedroom of an apartment in Amman, Jordan.

Sending the world as we know spinning into a new perspective of pop music, in their single, “Doom Scrolling,” especially, the audience is enthralled into a punk and new wave experience sonically as the lyrics depict the building paranoias behind the media as it is today, and what its power can very well hold in the future. The vocals are deadpan, instilling a sense of anxiety as a thrashing guitar only builds it further. And as the chorus offers concrete visuals of a character scrolling through their phone, the content they pan through continues to become more upsetting until as a result, they become de-sensitized to the horrors occurring around them. At the song’s climax, the vocalist sings, “Facebook’s down tonight,” and as a result, there’s a contrasting feeling of catharsis released and a sense of dread as the project leaves the listener up to the question: are they really better off with or without technology in the way?
