Dermot Kennedy Taps EARTHGANG For Reworking Of Hit “Better Days”

On January 28th, singer-songwriter Dermot Kennedy released a reworking of his hit song, “Better Days,” featuring Atlanta hip-hop duo EARTHGANG. This collaboration “finds Kennedy seamlessly marrying his love of hip-hop with his signature brand of authentic folk-laced pop.” Featuring a phenomenal verse split between both members of EARTHGANG (Johnny Venus and Doctur Dot), this remix of “Better Days” “brims with positivity and is a welcome anthem of universal hope.”

While the original song did carry the same message and energy, this remix benefits from the presence of one of the greatest hip-hop duos in modern music. With lines from Johnny Venus comparing himself to “roses in the concrete, so beautiful,” and Doctur Dot acknowledging that “Long as I’m alive know my days gettin’ better,” as well as constant adlibs from both members during Dermot’s sections providing that hype energy EARTHGANG is known for, this remix of “Better Days” carries the necessary crossover appeal to reach a broad audience and remind us all that we can “wait for better days,” even when times get hard.

Dermot Kennedy + EARTHGANG

Of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention just how powerful Kennedy’s vocals are on this track as well. It’s clear that he’s passionate about spreading this message, and his vocal performance works wonders. The way he switches from his softer voice to a gravelly yell so cleanly is amazing.

On the song, Dermot Kennedy comments, “I’m so honored to have EARTHGANG feature on ‘Better Days.’ We met in LA a while back and started talking about doing something together, and when they sent me the first pass of their verse I immediately loved it. They brought a new energy to the song but kept the same message of battling through adversity. I’m so glad they’re part of this song.” EARTHGANG also says that “Dermot is an amazing guy and this is a beautiful record. Music inspires hope, and people are in need of something to hope for these days.” It isn’t clear which member said that specifically, but it’s a true statement that music inspires hope.

Those who have read my recap of Outside Lands 2021 are well aware of the affinity I have for EARTHGANG, and this track only adds to that affinity. Dermot Kennedy also has put himself back on my radar with this, and I can’t recommend it enough. Check out “Better Days (feat. EARTHGANG)” below, and let us know what you think!
