DEMI LOVATO’S PERSONAL NEW SINGLE “29” FROM HER ALBUM “HOLY FVCK”

Demi Lovato has given us another single off her new album Holy Fvck on August 19 and debut “29” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “29” is the song where Demi opens up about a romantic relationship between a 29 year old and a 17 year old. Speculations have circled that this song is all about Demi’s past relationship with ex-boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama. They dated for six years and this song dives into how Demi feels about it many years later as a 29 year old (now 30, happy belated birthday angel!). The Grammy nominated superstar expressed in an interview the anxiety she had releasing this song but she just wanted to tell her truth. She just went for it and the song says it all.

“I feel like the song says it all. I don’t have to say too much, to be honest, but turning 29 was a huge eye opener for me. And then, going into treatment and having realizations led to my transformation, my release of the emotion that was put into this song.”

Demi Lovato on “29”

The lyrics in this song are very easy to interpret. Demi expresses that the 29 year old is the teacher while the 17 year old is the student. Makes sense in the context that someone older would be able to show someone younger the ways of the world. The song even goes on to say that Demi was too young to even drink wine and goes on to talk about what is considered consensual. “29” is packed with raw emotion and first hand experience. Demi really self-reflects that at the time it felt like a fantasy but was that really what she wanted or her partner?

She talks about how at 29 she is funny just like how that person was when they were that age. However, Demi sings that at 29, 17 would never cross her mind. As an artist, Demi has always been open about her life and how it plays a role in certain situations. In the fourth verse after the chorus, she goes on to express her “daddy issues” and how it just made sense as to why she felt that this relationship was right for her. Demi now talks about knowing better and still viewing this past boo as a collector. Throwing shade that they are still going after women that are much younger. Demetria is not amused by this. Check out the lyric video here.

Aside from the incredible and honest lyrics, Demi’s vocals always shine. She is such a powerhouse and this is one the softer songs off her new album. Even saying that, Demi still packs a punch with the melody, the way her emotion carries throughout the entire track. Truly an amazing song that perfectly captures self-reflection and growth.
