Exploring Rebellion: Cures and Curses’ “Harder Drugs”

Cures and Curses, a London-based alternative rock outfit, is back in the music scene with a blazing new single, “Harder Drugs.” This single arrives as the first major release since the eclectic debut EP, Liberate Me, which garnered attention and airplay on BBC Radio 1 and various regional BBC Introducing shows across London and Merseyside.

“Harder Drugs” is a sonic masterpiece that seamlessly blends elements of modern rock and pop. A formidable bassline anchors the composition from start to finish. Then shortly after its beginning, a weaving synth riff takes over. A soaring melody then takes center stage before the chorus drops.

While the song’s title might raise eyebrows, the band is quick to clarify that “the drugs are a metaphor.” This distinction is essential as it underscores the depth and complexity of the song’s themes. Rather than promoting substance abuse, the track uses the song’s concept as a symbol for the various means people employ to escape the harsh realities of life.

Beneath the surface of “Harder Drugs” lies a thought-provoking narrative that challenges the societal and economic gatekeepers of our world. The lyrics of the song articulate a yearning for escapism during challenging and uncertain times.

The band comments on the track:

A lot of young people like me feel the same way. Like everything we have is being taken away by someone else, and everything we want is being pulled further out of reach. This song sort of narrates that feeling, and speaks of a generation of people who are facing a reality and a future that feel increasingly bleak.
