Carl Craig revisited his early 90s Psyche alias, releasing a revamped version of his single “From Beyond.” Including his own C2 2023 Mix, fans can catch other remixes from Seth Troxler, Ataxia and Admn.
In 1990, the rise of Techno’s second generation led Carl Craig, a young musician, to a small village in Belgium. There, he discovered one of the country’s few drum machines, an Alesis-controlled midi-808. Focused and determined to make a breakthrough, Craig had a remarkable session where he composed and mixed a few records that are still considered some of his most intense and influential contributions to the history of electronic music.
At that time, it was still very ambiguous as to what Craig’s music would achieve and what genre it might be classified as. But he was onto something, and it would only take a moment for Black-led futurism to become prominent in the form of techno.
Fast forward to 2023, Craig revisits this significant chapter in his career with a fresh perspective. He presents a C2 2023 Mix of one of his acclaimed tracks under the alias Psyche, titled “From Beyond.” This track was originally released in 1990 as part of Crackdown, the 12″ vinyl, on Transmat. It offers a haunting glimpse into Craig’s mastery of the 808 drum machine and showcases the power of his limited production tools, distinguishing this release from his more aggressive projects like 69 and BFC.
The new release includes remixes from artists closely associated with Detroit and the Planet E label. Seth Troxler contributes a subdued acid touch to the mix, while Ataxia pays tribute to the original material by infusing it with renewed percussive energy. Additionally, Admn provides a soulful rework, completing the diverse range of remixes.
From his extensive 30-year catalog on Planet E to his Party/After-Party sound and light installation at MOCA in Los Angeles or his continuous support of Black-led creativity, Carl Craig’s mission remains unwavering: to represent Detroit and be the most authentic and genuine artist in the industry.
“From Beyond” is just one of the many tracks on his discography, and fans will find his other songs equally hypnotizing. Followers can also see him live at the various festivals at which he’ll be appearing, like Defected Croatia and ARC Music Festival.
