On September 30, rising country star Nate Smith released “Can You Die From A Broken Heart,” a somber breakup duet alongside diamond certified superstar Avril Lavigne. The single preceded the release of California Gold, Smith’s sophomore album which debuted in the Top 15 on Billboard’s Country Album Charts following its release on October 4.

The single is the second collaboration between these two artists, with the first being their remix of Smith’s hit “Bulletproof” which the duo performed at the 2024 ACM Awards. That same night, Smith took home the award for New Male Artist of the Year. Winning hasn’t just occurred at the ACM’s for Smith, as he was named 2024’s Billboard Rookie of the Year, Amazon’s Breakthrough Country ARtist of the Year, and received a CMA Award nomination for New Artist of the Near.

The most recent addition to this landmark year for Smith’s career is the release of the music video for “Can You Die From A Broken Heart.” Mason Allen and Nikki Fletcher directed the video for this soundtrack to heartbreak.

The video is stylistically centered around the natural world, using two distinct settings to reflect the deeper meaning of the track. Indoor sets are overflowing with bouquets of flowers or strands of dying ones, and contemplative seafront shots serve as the more simplistic and straightforward representation of nature.

These two settings provide a smart juxtaposition for a song that is centered around the belief that time is the only way to truly heal emotional wounds. By putting the natural constant of the ocean into conversation with flowers that have a clear lifespan, audiences are forced to reflect on the ways in which the passage of time is both healing and inescapable, ideas which the track inherently tackles as a heartfelt breakup anthem.

Smith is currently on his 2024 “Through The Smoke World Tour,” which will continue through the end of the year and wrap up in Nashville, TN on Dec. 5. In the meantime, watch the video for “Can You Die From A Broken Heart” and stream his newest album California Gold anywhere you get your music.
