Burna Boy Proves His Spot “Sittin’ On Top Of The World”

The Nigerian singer has released a new single, using a sampling from Brandy’s “Top Of the World” featuring Ma$e. In Burna Boy’s version, the track is given a modern transformation, with the help of producer Skread, and includes hints of the Afrofusion genre.

In June 1998, exactly 25 years ago, the @brandy classic album “Never Say Never” was released by the legend @rodneyjerkins. I listened to it over and over again that summer and it still remains today in my top three R&B albums. That summer, I also installed my first software to start playing around with samples. The bass of “Top of The World” was one of these. So I am super proud to have sampled this track 25 years later for the new single “Sittin’ On Top Of The World.”

– Skread

On one level, “Sittin’ On Top of The World” is a romantic song. Burna Boy describes the many ways he wishes to shower his lover with attention and appreciation. He has it all, but is willing to spend it all. On another level, the singer exudes self-confidence and empowerment, stating that he’s had his struggles and deserves every bit to be where he is.

Tell me, what do we do

When these people don’t know what you been through?

You survived through the night, through the darkest of times

It’s only right that you do what you do

– “Sittin’ On Top Of The World”

The music begins with bass, plucking for a few measures before the song fully kicks in. As it continues to play, fans will find the composition reminiscent of old-school hip-hop and R&B— it will take anyone back to the 1970s. Still, Burna Boy manages to tie in some pop elements as he bounces off the original. He successfully broadens his sound while embracing the classic touch of the sample and infusing Afro-fusion roots.

Already well-loved, Burna Boy has continued to captivate listeners. He has made appearances at Coachella, Dreamville Music Festival and Afro Nation Miami. There are still many performances to come, like Citi Field where he will be the first Nigerian musician to headline a stadium in the United States. Make sure to check out his future performances as well as his discography on Spotify.
