On October 15th, Nashville-based singer-songwriter Briston Maroney released the live version of his debut album, Sunflower, recorded live at Third Man Records. While keeping the performances faithful to the original recording, Maroney and his band rip through the material in a preview of what to expect from his live performances on his headlining world tour in 2022. What I’m about to say should come as a surprise to no one who has heard the record or seen Maroney live.
This is really good stuff. The songs are all well-written, featuring the hits “Bottle Rocket,” “It’s Still Cool If You Don’t,” and “Freeway,” and the musical performances on this live record are as incredible as they are on the studio album. The drums are tight, Maroney’s voice is as powerful as always, and the guitars sound fantastic. The only thing that isn’t “performative” about this live recording is the lack of stage banter, but why would an artist banter to an empty room?
Certain songs actually hit harder live than they do on record. “Why,” “Cinnamon,” and “The Kids” feel more powerful in the live recording. For what reason, I’m not 100% sure myself. It could just be the energy of a live performance coming through the speakers, but it also could be that the songs are meant to mimic the energy of a Nashville writer’s round. Those songs usually don’t carry the same weight on a recording because the intimacy of the performance is lost, but Maroney has regained it with this live recording. It’s magical.
In addition to the live audio recording, Maroney put out a full live video from Third Man Records on his YouTube channel, embedded below. Also, Briston Maroney’s headlining world tour for 2022 has been announced, and the dates are listed below as well! Some of the dates are unfortunately already sold out, but be sure to grab tickets if you are able. This live album proves that these shows are going to be incredible.
