Ben Abraham’s Dark Comedic Twist On Love In “If I Didn’t Love You” Music Video
Ben Abraham’s, “If I Didn’t Love You,” is one of the songs off his sophomore album, Friendly Fire. “If I Didn’t Love You” is an acoustic love song, with lyrics celebrating the simplicity of love, especially with the line, “And it’s strange/ How the touch of a hand can make you feel safe.”

The music video, however, juxtaposes the calm, romantic atmosphere of the song. Directed by Jillian Bell and starring married couple Charlie Day and Mary Elizabeth Ellis of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia fame, the “If I Didn’t Love You” music video begins on a sunny day in the park. It feels like the typical music video for a love song, as Abraham is playing and singing while Day and Ellis smile and look on. Once they decide to leave though, the story takes a dark twist.

Day and Ellis are playing chess in the park, as Abraham continues playing and singing. Normally, the actors in music videos don’t pay attention to the musician in the background, but now both Day and Ellis notice Abraham, causing them to exchange nervous glances with each other. At this point, they leave the park, and the scene switches to Charlie Day outside of his and Ellis’ house. Abraham is in their driveway, continuing to perform, and when Day sees Abraham, he runs inside. In the next scene, Ellis is washing her hands, and when she looks up in the mirror, Abraham is sitting behind her in the bathtub. After escaping the bathroom and supposedly trapping Abraham inside, she and Day hide in the closet, where, surprise surprise, Abraham is as well. Finally, they ask Abraham what he wants, and Day realizes that he wants them to dance. What could have been a sweet moment becomes a deadly spectacle, as Day and Ellis lose it and, supposedly, beat Abraham to death. Once they’re covered in his blood, the couple panics and tries escaping, but are blocked by Abraham again, this time as he is sitting on a stool, covered in his blood. As Abraham finishes the song, Day notices a QR code on Abraham’s guitar. Scanning the QR code reveals “PayMoi,” (essentially Venmo) so that Abraham can be paid for his performance. Day pays Abraham, and that is when the musician finally gets up, thanks the couple, and leaves.
Although “If I Didn’t Love You” is an acoustic love ballad, the music video twists the love story into a dark comedy.
