Automatic Releases Their New Single “Skyscraper” From Their Newest Album Excess

Before the drop of Automatic’s new album Excess on June 24th, the band released the music video for their single, “Skyscraper.” The song is a blend of 70’s soft rock and 80’s synth, with heavy bass and percussion, which is Automatic’s signature style that can be heard throughout the tracks on Excess

“Skyscraper” is about the meaningless and dull reality of trying to succeed by “climbing the ladder” in the corporate world. The drudgery of this life is spelled out in the chorus through the lyrics, “Change, if you wanna (If you wanna)/ Or stay the same/ There’s no difference in the end/ Shame, that you gotta (That you gotta)/ Play the game/ Every dollar gets you off.” The music video features the band members Lola Dompé, Izzy Glaudini, and Halle Saxon-Gaines dressed up in oversized pantsuits, and sporting the same black wig with bangs, working in a corporate office.

The music video also contains elements that seem to be taken straight from a 70’s TV show or movie. Alex Thurmond, the music video director, explains what inspired the visuals for the music video,

“The pitfalls of capitalism and corporate life can be easy to fall into. American Psycho and Office Space were both points of reference, the glorification of monotonous tasks and success measured by climbing the corporate ladder. Those movies have such an over the top, satirical quality that really matches the tone of the song, and it was fun to play that up.”

The release of “Skyscraper” followed the drop of their first single from Excess, “New Beginning.” Fans of Automatic’s retro 70’s sound will enjoy “New Beginning,” which is accompanied by a music video full of scenes that look like they’re taken straight from a 60’s sci-fi movie or TV show. Another great single to check out from Automatic is “Venus Hour,” also off of Excess.
