Anna Baldree’s Chilling New Track, “Final Girl”

Chattanooga-based songstress Anna Baldree has a knack for indie rock and dream pop, but that wasn’t always the case. Raised on a diet of church hymns and Disney pop, Anna knew she loved music from an early age, but it wasn’t until she picked up a guitar at 15 that she began to develop her passion. When she finally outgrew her Disney phase, she turned to the likes of Nirvana and My Bloody Valentine and wrote her very first song. Drawing on influences such as Mazzy Star, The Cranberries, Radiohead, as well as contemporaries like The 1975, Phoebe Bridgers, and Soccer Mommy, Anna now juxtaposes catchy, ethereal melodies with melancholy lyricism.

Her debut single “Try Again” is one such example, contrasting an infectious hook with vacillating feelings of alienation. Following her debut, a slower track pulls its listener in to experience a taste of vulnerability that gently eases and calms with its cathartically slow beat and dreamy vocals. The atmospherical daydream the track creates takes the audience into a time capsule of her creation, where she had overly romanticized a person to “the point of no return,” as she puts it.

I really did have a dream they were a serial killer and woke up with this sense of clarity about the whole situation: Pining can be easier than actually getting to know someone, and it stays perfect in my head, as opposed to having the real thing only for it to be a disappointment.
