almost sex’s song “Lateral,” released Friday, showcases the group’s hypnotic, genre-defying style. The alt-pop project, with singer-songwriter Nick Louis, multi-instrumentalist and producer Ken Helmlinger, percussionist Sam Gautier, guitarist Darrel Norrel, and keyboardist Zach Jenning, brings fresh sounds straight out of Brooklyn. We cannot get enough.
Instrumentally, our music has always been heavily influenced by hip hop, but never before did we try to infuse the vocal end of things with a rap cadence. On “Lateral” we decided to take things to the next level and add some half-sung, half-rapped verse vocals in the signature tonality of our previous work.

Floating between a gentler, indie-influenced vibe and hip-hop elements, almost sex creates an irresistible rhythm. Interwoven acoustic instrumentation and electronic production set up for an undeniably catchy track with just the right groove.
almost sex gets introspective with a touch of cynicism. The group digs deep, singing of feeling stuck in a cycle, lost in a state of imbalance. It questions why people are the way they are and why there’s so much pain.
It’s like a lateral motion
~ “Lateral”
I’m moving all day
To the sidestep rhythm
Of my seesaw ways
Maybe a little brittle
No maybe I’m broken
