Ally Hills’ “manipuLIES” Brings A Fun Twist To The Conversation of Toxic Relationships

Many songs exploring toxic relationships and failed love originate from the artist’s personal experience. These songs sometimes serve as a method of therapy as the artist lets out everything they are feeling into the lyrics and instrumental arrangement. At first, when listening to Ally Hills’ latest electro-pop single, “manipuLIES,” this seems to follow a similar pattern. The lyrics portray a tale of someone avoiding the toxic back and forth of forming a relationship with a “player,” describing the feelings of empowerment and the red flags that caught her attention. However, ” manipuLIES ” came from a more innocent place.

According to Hills, the song was born from the dramatic thoughts of a 10-year-old girl who hadn’t experienced romantic turmoil but still wanted to write a song about it. The musician goes further in telling the story of what led to the creation of her newest track,

“I never thought I would actually release “manipuLIES” because it was made just for fun. After finding some childhood memorabilia, my girlfriend sent me a photo of lyrics she had written when she was 10 and that night I turned them into a song to give to her on our third date the next day. As far as the meaning goes, the lyrics are pretty straight forward, but at the end of the day the song is simply a sentimental inside joke between her and I more than anything else.”

Even though this song isn’t about a specific relationship for Hills, the track is still perfect for anyone who has dealt with a similar situation. The upbeat tempo and thump of the bass at the beginning of the song make it easy for anyone to dance along to, whether in celebration of avoiding that toxic relationship or just enjoying the fun atmosphere of the music.

Ally Hills first rose to fame on her YouTube channel, with content focusing on comedy, music, and stories about her experience in the LGBTQ+ community. Aside from “manipuLIES,” she recently released the single, “If I Don’t,” off her latest EP, Love and Other Figments of My Imagination.
