Aidan Bisset’s “So High” Is A Summer Pop Anthem

Florida indie-pop singer Aidan Bisset released his newest single, titled “So High,” this week, along with an accompanying video. Bisset had previously teased the song on Instagram and Tik Tok.

Bisset grew up in Florida and Oregon listening to classic rock staples like AC/DC and Led Zeppelin, channeling their guitar pyrotechnics into his own brand of high-energy alt-pop when he started songwriting and producing as a teenager. After his debut single, “Different” earned him an admirable Tik Tok following, he landed his follow-ups, “Worst Girls of All Time” and “More Than Friends” on major Spotify playlists, leading to a deal with Capitol records before he finished high school, along with the single “Communication.” Thanks to a major music video and press from Wonderland and BuzzFeed, Bisset’s total streams have already passed 10 million.

“So High” is Bisset’s second release for Capitol. It finds him largely eschewing the slightly abrasive guitar-based song construction of his first releases – there is barely any guitar on the track at all – in favor of a broader and more commercial sound that draws on the last decade of crossover rap and its broader influence across popular music. Bisset deploys a repetitive, anthemic melody through the verses, repeatedly using parallelism between adjacent lines to create familiarity and contrast. The song starts out mellow, with just Bisset’s voice, coated in a healthy layer of reverb, drums, and some synths flowing in the background, barely perceptible.

Much of “So High”’s growth comes from subtleties in the song’s production, turning up certain vocal effects at the ends of sections or changing the delay on the synthesizers. Bisset has several hooks spread across the song, and they lead into each other effortlessly, working in tandem with the song’s production.

The release is accompanied by a music video directed by Conan Grey collaborator Dillon Matthew, in which Basset is on a cliff overlooking the ocean, performing the song in the summer sun.

“So High” by Aidan Bisset is out now on streaming services.
