Everybody loves a good love song, especially when it comes from a handsome blond-eyed brunette playing guitar. “I Must Be In Love” is as sappy as it sounds, but with an edgy indie rock twist. Being the second single off Aaron Taos’ upcoming album, it showcases how this artist is capable of putting a fresh spin on a topic that’s been done time and time again. The track has a nostalgaic feeling that pulls the listener in for the ballad. Taos’ low voice with a smooth delivery is paired with airy dream pop guitar and bass melodies and a pretty bumpin’ drum set beat. It’s a sweet tune to listen to and the visual is quite tasteful to match the song’s energy.
In the visual, Taos and his bandmates take the stage with a “too cool for school” attitude. Just like the song, it starts very slow and vibey. The camera pans between each bandmate, showcasing their individual style and skills. Right when the energy starts to build up, a ballerina pops out on stage to visualize the felt crescendo of sound. By the time the last reprieve comes around, Taos is no longer chill; he is moving and wailing all over the stage in a more animated and groovy manner.
“I Must Be In Love” is a song of discovery. Rather than a direct statement, the song follows someone working through and ultimately realizing that they are in fact, in love. The verses serve as the confessional – the point where I am describing my symptoms to myself through the guise of singing to this other person. As each verse ends, the chorus comes in as the answer to the preceding ruminations. Its hook lyrics begin more unsure, “I think I’m in love,” to a bit more confidant, “I must be in love,” to the final loud begrudging acceptance, “Well fuck it, I’m in love!” I always thought that this approach to a love song would be interesting. Love is such a visceral emotion that oftentimes the physical side of us realizes we are in the throes of it quicker than our brain will admit. “I Must Be In Love” follows the head as it goes through the journey of discovering what the heart has already told itself a long time ago.
