Insomniac Music Group has launched a new imprint, BREAK ROOM. The new division of Insomniac will cater to bass music fans, primarily focusing on boundary-pushing trap, hardwave, and experimental bass music.
BREAK ROOM’s first single, “Ultra,” is a collaboration between producers Hex Cougar and VARI. The track is the first single from Hex Cougar’s forthcoming EP on BREAK ROOM, and it’s an exciting glimpse into what’s to come next from the electronic trailblazer.
Hex Cougar said that VARI sent him the original idea for the track in 2023, leading to an efficient creative process between the two talents.
The whole process flowed easily and felt natural, and it’s probably one of my favorite tracks to date. It’s loud, euphoric, aggressive, and kind of symbolizes me falling back in love with heavy electronic music after a long period of feeling like I had maybe outgrown the genre

“Ultra” is a striking hardware track that’s frenetic drum line keeps listeners on the edge of their seat, in large part thanks to the layering of a breakbeat drum loop behind the main trap drums. Aside from these rhythmic elements, the track’s chest pounding low-end and melodic ripples make it a constantly engaging track. The synth lead of the track is dynamic and unpredictable, creating a palpable energy.
VARI admired his counterparts ability to infuse the original track he sent with this energy.
Once we found the initial demo I had, he took it and turned the energy up to 11. After going back and forth, I think the track perfectly walks the line between heavy/glitchy beats and the melodic/ethereal aesthetic we’re both known for.
