Twitch is making waves with a groundbreaking program that will transform how DJs steam and monetize their music. Last month, Twitch announced they are partnering with industry giants like Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, among many others. DJs can now stream in a dedicated DJ category and build their channel.
A new era for DJ livestreaming.
As the first major service to provide a dedicated home for DJs to livestream, Twitch is ready to reshape the landscape of digital music.
On other platforms, DJs face major hurdles when trying to stream or monetize their craft due to copyright reasons. As a result, Twitch’s new DJ program eliminates these barriers. This will allow DJs to focus on growing and engaging with their communities without the threat of penalties.

However, participating DJs in the program must contribute a percentage of their earnings from streams to cover some of the music rights costs. In an official blog post, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy clarified that the cost will be determined by how a channel monetizes. If a DJ isn’t monetizing on the platform, they would not need to pay anything.
This innovative program marks a milestone for Twitch and the DJ community. Since early 2020, DJs on Twitch have seen a surge in popularity. The numbers continue keep growing daily. With this growth, Twitch wants to ensure fair compensation for both musicians and DJs.
Opt-in flexibility
To help existing Twitch DJs adjust to the new program, Twitch will offer a one-year subsidy to cover the difference that will be paid out to music companies. This subsidy will reduce over time as the service grows. Additionally, the program is available exclusively to those who livestream as DJ and does not apply to other uses of music. DJs can opt-in without immediately impacting their revenue.
However, upon opt-in, DJs will need to sign a new agreement that will govern all streaming on their channel. It’s recommended that for those who only stream DJ content part-time, to set up a separate channel dedicated solely for DJ livestreaming.
The program rolls out later this summer. DJs worldwide will have the opportunity to take advantage of the new system. This paves the way for a more vibrant and sustainable DJ culture on Twitch.
