New UK Club Brings Artist-Run Venue to Music Fans

On 96 Maxwell Street in Glasgow, Scotland, local artists and DJs have given new life to a formerly abandoned pub space. The 35,000-square-foot property was meant to reinvigorate the alternative music scene of the area and be a venue for visibility and social outreach. Open since September, EXIT Glasgow has already had successful fundraisers to purchase music equipment for the location as well as weekly events for various charities.

EXIT is utilizing the demand for a UK alternative scene with adult-oriented events to support local musicians and organizations in need. Glasgow is home to a number of unique genres, including UK garage, D&B, jungle, and experimental ambient. The club is for ages 18 and up, bringing together socially conscious adults in a shared space. Every weekend is dedicated to donating entry fees to different foundations, like the Palestinian aid fundraiser for Medical Aid for Palestinians.

We aim to bring the local scene together and create a platform for exchange between artists, musicians and DJs. We’re not genre-specific and we’re focusing on bringing diverse, unpredictable and often secret unannounced lineups, with the majority of programming done in-house. We’ll be running experimental early shows as well, and as well as the membership scheme, we’ll have sliding scale tickets available and will strive to support various local communities with fundraiser events.

EXIT Glasgow team

The club does both announced and secret events, posting line-ups in advance for ticket purchases or posting vague yet intriguing clues about the theme of their next event. These secret line-ups are posted retroactively, adding to the appeal of the venue.

They are adamant that simply purchasing a ticket does not guarantee entry– in every Instagram post, they mention that “no discrimination or harassment of any kind” is permitted. To get into the newest alternative club, which is already in high demand and often selling events out, patrons must exemplify its values. Uplifting the community and providing aid is the primary mission of EXIT.

Tickets can be purchased through Resident Advisor Tickets, and occasionally up-front. Events are announced through their Instagram regularly.
