CLOVES returned with her latest single, “Good Try,” adding another sad song to her discography. The Australian artist, real name Kaity Dunstan, is an expert when it comes to writing on heartbreak, in a way that both reaffirms and rewrites the indie pop genre.

just a little something for your end of summer blues, hope you like this one

– CLOVES

Her newest track is no different, speaking on a relationship that could’ve been. She feels lost, but cannot help but look back on those times and that person.

Now I’m so far away from wrong
I just can’t put my finger on
Tell me what I am running from?

– “Good Try”

The song keeps the accompaniment to a minimum, starting with a piano at a slow tempo. The first few lines immediately get listeners thinking of the perfect “sad slow dance song”. CLOVES’ voice sounds stretched out and warbling, almost like listening to an old record in an open space.

Entering the chorus, an electric guitar comes and her voice becomes more echoey and muffled. Still, the singer retains that slow and soft quality. Only when singing the chorus does she switch to a deep and heavier sound as she repeats the lyrics, “You gave it a good try, baby”.

Recently, CLOVES took to Instagram to celebrate 100 million plays of “Don’t Forget About Me,” a track featured on her debut album, XIII, in 2015. Though she performed and sang live from an early age, it was this track that put the aspiring artist on people’s radar. Today, CLOVES is continuing to mix new music, and fans will know that she, more than anyone, is excited to share it.

Make sure to follow CLOVES on Instagram for any news and updates. Also give her discography a listen on Spotify, as well as her recent collaboration with Bakermat, “Insane (feat. CLOVES).”
