606 Records Makes Waves In Chicago Highlighting Underground Music

Walk into 606 Records, and you’re immediately immersed in a clean, welcoming aesthetic. Artistic semicircles adorn the white walls like abstract soundwaves in varying shades of blue to complement the room’s azure paint. With rows and rows of bins to explore, the shop’s organized vibe is minimalistic yet offers the maximum quality.

But 606 Records is no run-of-the-mill boring old record store. It’s a community-based independent record store and music label, too. 606 Records emphasizes the independent, the underground, and the worldwide, according to its website. It boasts new and used vinyl, focusing on finds from small and independent labels around the world. If you’re looking for tracks that haven’t yet hit the mainstream — in the States or abroad — look no further than 606 Records. Don’t worry, though; 606 Records also spotlights Chicago artists to rep the community. So snag a spot at one of the store’s listening stations and hear what 606 Records brings to the table.

606 Records is a bit newer to the block compared to other Chicago staples, opening in 2015. The strikingly gorgeous shop is located in Pilsen at 1808 S. Allport Street. Whether you’re near the neighborhood or not, it’s worth the trip. Take the L, hop off at 18th, and you’re basically there, with a location just across from iconic venue Thalia Hall. Voila, you’ve made it to one of the coolest spots around town.

This shop gets its name from the start of its Chicago zip code, showing just how much it’s rooted in its community. It fits in well with Pilsen’s thriving vinyl scene but stands out with its own signature selection. Not stopping at this classic is skipping out on a world of opportunities. On Yelp, 606 Records is rated a perfect five stars — a feat that seems fitting for just how good this hip record store is. It’s easy to leave the storefront with a full bag and a happy heart.

Thumb through the store’s merchandise and take advantage of its “deal digs,” too. It has fair prices throughout, attracting casual listeners and vinyl collectors alike. The shop also carries a diverse array of genres … so pretty much everything you never knew you wanted.

Don’t forget that 606 Records just returned to its summer hours: The shop is open noon to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays through Fridays, and it opens at 11 a.m. instead on the weekend. So be extra sure to make it to 606 Records on days they feature local artists at the turntables for increased vibes while you browse and uncover your next new thing.

The shop regularly posts updates on new releases, events, deals, and giveaways, so check out what 606 Records is up to on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or its website
