Death Cab For Cutie’s Unique Release for Their Single “Rand McNally”

Throughout the past month, Death Cab For Cutie has experimented with a fun new way for fans to experience the release of their single, “Rand McNally.”  The single is available for exclusive, in-person listening at any venue the band has played throughout their 25-year career. Fans can unlock the track using an official geotagged map featuring over 800 locations. A few of these sites include where Death Cab For Cutie played their first ever show at The Pacer House in Bellingham, WA, to their headline show at New York’s legendary Madison Square Garden. It also includes venues worldwide, like Tokyo’s Astro Hall, and even places now closed, such as New York’s Roseland Ballroom.

The title, “Rand McNally,” is about the atlas commonly used before the internet. It is a fitting title for a song dedicated to anyone the band had toured with, whether they were supporting acts or old bandmates. Death Cab For Cutie’s lead vocalist, Benjamin Gibbard, shares the meaning behind “Rand McNally,”

“‘Rand’ was written for everyone we toured with back in the day, for everyone who let us sleep on their floor, and for past bandmates. I felt after all these years that they deserved their own folk song. But also a promise to keep going and keep creating.”

Listen to “Rand McNally” below:

“Rand McNally” is one of the singles off Death Cab For Cutie’s latest album, Asphalt Meadows, which dropped September 16th. Other singles released before the album’s arrival include the spoken-word track, “Foxglove Through The Clearcut,” the upbeat “Here to Forever,” and the album’s first single, “Roman Candles.”

The band is currently on their Asphalt Meadows tour, which started on September 22nd at The Sylbee in Madison, WI, and finishes on October 27th at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, WA. Death Cab For Cutie is also touring throughout Europe in March of 2023. For more information on the tour and to get tickets, visit Death Cab For Cutie’s official website.

In the meantime, be sure to check out Asphalt Meadows below!
