Exclusive Premiere: Sofi Gev’s new song “Someday, Maybe” is a potent journey through loss
Softly stepping across strong Ivorite keys, a piano sounds out in smooth chords at the beginning of “Someday, Maybe”. Gently, Gev lends her fragile voice to the foundation, recounting vivid memories of the past when the one she loved was still alive. The rich, emotional soundscape builds with each new verse. The lyrics, too, become more entrenched in their vivid vulnerability, familiar in their universal scents and feelings (heavy coats, the cologne that is yours, wet dirt underneath calloused feet.)
A family of strings, the moving violin, brings depth to the burgeoning sound. Gev’s voice is then joined by harmonies of similar tones to her own solo one. “Call me when you get there/I want to hear your voice/will you call me?” It layers almost unexpectedly, building until it dramatically falls, leaving the silence Gev is left with, too, after she accepts that the one she loves is never coming back.

I think it might feel like the ground disappearing under your feet. You’re suspended in freefall, looking for a safe landing that never comes,” she explained. “A dusty hollowness permeates your house, so you step outside desperate for some fresh air, but the feeling follows you like a headache. Not knowing what happens after death, you wonder if you might hear from them again somehow, but you also feel ridiculous doing so. The worst kind of isolation.”
