Andrea Rugarli’s artistic journey combines portraits with narratives derived from fantasies and dreams, in an attempt to grapple with questions surrounding youth, androgyny and desire. Deeply invested in the exploration of the artist’s gaze, his paintings embody and present the contradictions inherent to the artist-subject relationship. As such, the works tap into an ancient practice, yet embrace a reality where the individual’s identity is affected by a new form of fragmentation and expansion. These ideas permeate the aura of his compositions, inviting the viewer to see through the eyes of the artist, to take part in the dialogue between the brushstrokes the world shimmering within.
