On October 3rd, Memphis-based indie rock outfit Dream Crusher Hope Smasher put out their EP, Vertebrate Moves, which includes the track, “Grey Foxes.” Drawing inspiration from “Radiohead and Interpol,” “Grey Foxes” uses the sound of the Fender Rhodes (which I have gone on and on about here) to create a calming wall of sound. In the calm is this sense of unease, and that tension works its magic throughout the entirety of the five-and-a-half-minute track.
Complete with saxophone and guitar solos, the instrumentation of this track is incredible. Though there is a questionable production decision – the snare drum sounds like Metallica’s St. Anger snare – the volume levels are necessary for the wall to feel like a wall, and at its peaks, the listener feels like they might lose control. However, the band has masterfully crafted a track flow that brings the peaks and valleys to the forefront, allowing the sound to wash over the listener and make them feel complete release.
