80s Icons Debbie Harry, Dolly Parton, Belinda Carlisle, Cyndi Lauder, and Gloria Estefan Team up to Release “Gonna Be You” for upcoming movie, 80 For Brady

80 For Brady is a movie directed by Kyle Marvin that is set to be released in theatres on Feb.3. The movie’s plot revolves around four lifelong best friends, all aged 80, making a “life changing” journey to see their hero, Tom Brady. The movie stars Academy Award nominee Lily Tomlin as well as Academy Award winners Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno and Sally Field.

Adding onto the movie’s soundtrack will be “Gonna Be You”, a song heralded by a collection of iconic singers. This list includes country legend Dolly Parton, the inimitable Debbie Harry, the legendary Belinda Carlistle, the inspirational Cyndi Lauper and the awe-inspiring Gloria Estefan. The single will be released on Jan.20, a few days prior to the movie premier.

Dolly Parton is a musician that needs little introduction. Leading a highly successful career in country music from the 60s, she has been the source of inspiration to many singers including Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus. She famously wrote both “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You”, two of modern pop’s biggest releases, on the same day.

Debbie Harry is the frontwoman of Blondie, one of the most popular new wave bands. Blondie came out of the 1970s New York punk scene to enjoy major success in the 70s and 80s and are still putting out releases to this day.  Debbie Harry has also found success with her solo career that she launched after Blondie’s temporary disbandment.

Belinda Carlistle, like Debbie Harry also fronted a new wave band- The Go Go’s. The Go Go’s, as opposed to Blondie, came out of the L.A punk scene of the 70s. Belinda Carlistle had a strong solo career following the band’s breakup as well, with her most popular song being the now iconic “Heaven is a Place on Earth”.

Cyndi Lauper was also a singer whose career broke out in the 70s. Her music was upbeat, danceable and daring. She is the voice behind iconic songs such as “Time After Time” and “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

Gloria Estfean is a Cuban American actress and singer who began her career as the vocalist for Miami Latin Boys, which was later renamed to Miami Sound Machine. Like the other woman in the list, she enjoyed a successful solo career as well. Estefan’s total record sales exceeded 75 million worldwide and she has been credited for opening the door for many Latin singers to succeed in America.

“Gonna Be You” was written by Honorary Oscar, Grammy and Emmy Award-winning songwriter Diane Warren. Diane Warren has been behind the scenes and written for iconic artists from Aretha Franklin to Justin Bieber to Zendaya. Some of the songs she wrote includes “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” by Whitney Houston and Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.”

“When I wrote ‘Gonna Be You’ for 80 FOR BRADY, I wanted to write a song that celebrated these women’s deep friendship,” says Warren. “Since 80 was in the title I got a crazy idea, why not get some of the most iconic singers from the 80s, who are still amazing and always will be, to all sing it?!!!! Everyone I approached said yes and was just as excited as me!! I’m honored to have Dolly Parton, Belinda Carlisle, Cyndi Lauper, Gloria Estefan and Debbie Harry on this song!! ‘Gonna Be You’ is that song you want to sing along to with all your good friends!!!”

The song “Gonna Be You” will be out Jan.20. The movie, 80 For Brady premieres on Feb.3.
