Pumpehuset, in collaboration with Scratch Copenhagen, presented a double night show with GZA of the Wu-Tang. There was no support for either show, so the evening was started by a local Danish DJ warming up a fully packed club with the mixture of the biggest hip-hop hits.
Shortly after 10 PM, the deck was taken over by DJ Symphony who introduced himself with fa ew beats from his favorite hip hop acts to shortly introduce – the one and only GZA the Genius. He entered the stage and immediately started to push first lines of his lyrics applauded by the fans.
With a minimal set up, one of the Wu-Tang MC’s provided hit after hit – mixing his solo music with the classic tracks of Wu-Tang. At some point of the show, he invited a fan per night from the crowd to rap along with him on stage. The highlight of these two nights was definitely a young kid who was invited to join the GZA from the crowd on Saturday – this kid basically killed it. Rapping together with his idol, following all the lyrics and definitely enjoying his moment. In the final part of the concert, GZA flies from the stage, into the crowd, to perform for them face to face (literally) – this was a real old school move and yet another highlight for the Wu family gathered in Pumpehuset.
To sum up – what GZA provided was not a standard concert experience – these two nights were a Wu-Tang experience planned for the hardcore fans, where in addition, GZA heavily involved crowd in the event. I know for some fans it was not really what they expected, but definitely it was a nice experience and a good appetizer before the Wu-Tang Clan concert on May 21st 2019 in Copenhagen, Denmark at the Royal Arena with support from Public Enemy, De La Soul and DJ Premier.
