Today, the London-based singer-songwriter released “Popcorn and a Smoothie,” which is the newest single from his upcoming EP, i felt, and one that provides perhaps the most personal moment on the four-track collection.
“Popcorn and a Smoothie” is a message from Ray to his little brother, who he never really knew. Not knowing how to reconnect with him, Ray wrote the song as a means of reaching out and trying to get to know him.
Speaking on the single, Ray shares:
“Popcorn and a Smoothie” was initially written about my relationship with my little brother that I never got to know. This song, whilst a message reaching out to my half-brother, also felt like something I would’ve wanted my absent father to have said to me at that age.

Through poetic lyrics, Ray makes an emotionally raw and honest attempt to catch himself up on the parts of his brother’s life he missed. The tenderness and vulnerability in his voice is palpable as he sings about wishing his brother a happy birthday, asking him about his well-being at home and school, wondering if he wants to do any activities together, and vowing to keep promises other people have left empty.

“Popcorn and a Smoothie” gifts us Ray’s rich, soulful vocals with baritone deliveries reminiscent of Giveon. Influences of contemporary R&B and classic soul run throughout the simple, acoustic guitar-led track, showcasing his fresh production style. As the song progresses, a light kick drum is added to drive the song forward and additional production elements create an uplifting sound that leads to a soft finish.
