Many in the rock and metal music community have begun to whisper the name Vana in conversations online. Her latest single “In Your Name” has been no exception.
The New Zealand-based artist merges an industrial alt-metal sound with brutal riffs, electro-pop elements, trap-influenced production, and visceral vocals. With a recent debut on Sumerian Records, “Pray” has achieved nearly four million streams on Spotify alone. This single shortly follows it up with a steady increase in momentum.
“In Your Name” begins with a haunting and dissonant vocal melody. Vana’s vocals effortlessly flow into the production as piano lilts and harmonizes with her vocals throughout the rest of the first verse. From there, the song continues to build and enmesh a blend of genres. All of it builds to its peak: a heavy series of screams from Vana herself – all throughout the second verse, chorus, and bridge. The performance induces chills throughout the spine.
Lyrically, the song challenges the perspectives of love and relationships. Vana comments on the meaning of the song:
Falling in love is painful. Where there is equal love, there will inevitably be equal loss. Sometimes you fall in love even when it hurts you. Sometimes, loving someone you know is bad for you hurts less than grieving the loss of that love. ‘In Your Name’ demonstrates how far some would go in the name of love, no matter how toxic that love may be.
~ Vana
Vana’s lyrical themes contrast with the occult, religion, and feature breathtaking and strong dark visuals. There’s a sense of beautiful chaos to her work as a result that refuses to be pinned down.
Vana is hitting the road throughout spring. See the full list of tour dates below:
