Sullivan King Says “CHAOS WILL BRING PEACE”

What better remedy to head-spinning, noisy grandeur is there than stillness? This question sparked the story behind Sullivan King’s new EP, CHAOS WILL BRING PEACE, released via Monstercat Uncaged. The American dubstep artist has spent the last 10+ years reinventing the genre, deepening it with the rich sounds of metal and rock. This latest project reaffirms his abrasive-yet-organized sound while highlighting the rewards of unleashing fury through music.

The writing process began coming off the highs of King’s last tour, which he labeled “an especially chaotic time when every night was both insane and incredibly rewarding.” After numerous ambitious studio sessions, some with names like DIESEL and NGHTMRE, seven cohesive tracks made the final cut.

“CHAOS WILL BRING PEACE”  plays first. It sets an ominous tone, quickly exploding into a hyped up mixture of metallic, warping guitar riffs and laser “pews.” For a measure, the first drop dangles above the listener, then dropping into an aggressively punchy bass. This suspension motif continues with the second drop, offering a different resolution: a hard techno interjection. If anything, this track makes the “chaos” clear.

Second comes “The Beginning.” This track seems to introduce the “peace” element with an atmospheric, melodic verse that descends back into dissonance as screams break the surface. Rolling drums ground the track, preparing the listener for an incoming drum and bass breakdown that is not for the weak. A euphoric fog surrounds the dramatic and intense lyrics that beg for a clean slate.

Next is “Slaughter,” which features bass metal artist Vastive. Together, King and Vastive created the most theatrical track on the EP. A fear-inducing loop of layered electric guitars warms up to a murderous core of scathing synths. Each beat cuts like a cleaver while searing the high ends to the max. This song feels like the embodiment of a dare.

“Fury” delivers the command, “Now show them fury,” joined by trap and riddim producer Emorfik. It is dizzying and visceral, providing an all-encompassing cathartic release through hammer-like headbanging. About halfway through the EP, here is where the energy peaks.

In “SWEAT!,” Kayzo brings his eclectic trap background. Contrasting the previous four tracks, this track is rhythmically the most palatable for non-hardcore enjoyers. Standing alone, it would still be considered highly-stimulating and intense, but in the context of the EP, it allows for much-needed breathing room.

“Never Come Back (feat. Shaquille O’Neal)” takes the stage next. DIESEL (commonly known as Shaquille O’Neal) and Kompany add dominance through voice and sound. DIESEL’s low, rumbling voice resonates deeply like an evil, omnipotent overlord as he growls, “I’m gonna make you bend / I wanna feel your break / Open your last days and take all that you made.” This track most directly sends a lyrical message, addressing the power of chaos.

Rounding out the cacophony is “Lean Onto Me (feat. Grabbitz).” NGHTMRE and Grabbitz skillfully infuse this track with their bass expertise and vocals. Ending the EP on a slightly brighter note, this track is a grand ending. Even with the occasional scream and a middle section chock-full of metallic sounds, the romantic lyrics lighten the load.

Overall, CHAOS WILL BRING PEACE condenses the highs and lows of being a professional performer into creative pandemonium. He honors the taboo sensations of rage, delivering the exact feelings he felt on tour to the listener. It is equally as possible to find peace through chaos as it is to reach it after.
