Sly Boy Drops New Track, “Dead,” Featuring Maggie Miles
On February 17th, Nashville-based songwriter and producer Sly Boy released his new single! “Dead,” featuring fellow Nashville artist Maggie Miles, is an excellent mix of different branches of the pop tree. Coming together “as a mixture of twenty-one pilots meets Bieber, with a lil Billie Eilish,” the track sees the duo reflecting on being alone and “exploring religion, temptation, guilt, and lostness.”
The track was released alongside a video that premiered on February 16th. In the video, Sly Boy and Maggie Miles are seen smoking in a car and then carrying a shovel into the woods. What they are burying is kept purposely ambiguous, but the darkness in the song is captured expertly by the darkness of the video. There are colors present, but they are extremely muted. This gives a viewer an extra dose of that sense of dread within the song.
As for the song itself, there are very solid moments throughout the entire track. The vocal harmonies are gorgeous every time they come in. The church bells between the first chorus and the second verse add even more to the intensity of the production. Centering the song on a guitar and bass allows the wall of sound a suitable foundation to build off of, and the drums, while subdued, maintain that steady heartbeat a song like this needs.
Furthermore, both voices on the track are absolutely stunning. The only real qualm I have relating to the production is the effects placed on Maggie Miles’ vocals leading into the second chorus. Every other time you hear any vocals, they feel natural and lend a sense of humanity to the darkness the song is enveloped in. On those lines, it seems like the computer is taking over and removing humanity from the equation. However, that is a minimal complaint because it lasts only five seconds. Everything else works to perfection, and there is a massive amount of promise shown on this track. I’m excited to see what comes next.
