Sara Kays has dropped a visualizer for her newest release, “Show Me Off.” The song follows several collaborations released earlier in the year, like “Miss Me The Same” (with Anson Seabra) and “Bored.” It’s been a while since it was just Kays, and listeners were thrilled at the announcement.
“Show Me Off” tells the story of a situationship in which a partner acts differently in private versus public. When it’s just the two of them, Kays describes this person as affectionate and charming, but treats her like a stranger when they’re outside. So while Kays attempts to get closer, contemplating a more serious relationship, he finds any reason to avoid commitment.
He’ll say I’m pretty outside the bar, then
– “Show Me Off”
I’m just a stranger when we walk in
I want a witness, I want a garden
He wants the blinds drawn, he wants a fence
The visualizer takes on the aesthetic of an old VCR, staticky and pixelated. Meanwhile, the video maintains a blue tone, matching the emotions of the music. Kays simply stands in front of the camera, as it switches from close-ups to full shots. She is very much herself, wearing a loose, striped sweater and a beanie.
At times, the blue tone fades to white. Other times, a light shines and warms the composition. If the visualizer is a moving portrait of the artist, it’s as if she’s having a moment of self-reflection and realization. Understanding that she may never receive the showing off she wants, Kays must make a decision.
Many fans expressed their love for the song, adding comments and responding with their experiences. It goes to show how well the singer-songwriter expressed the frustration and complexity of a situationship. But onto better things: Sara Kays will be on tour starting September, supporting Dean Lewis on The Future Is Bright Tour 2023. Check out tickets on Kays’ official website and make sure to check out her discography on Spotify.
