Witty songstress Sabrina Carpenter returned with her new single “Espresso” just in time for her Coachella debut this past weekend. She teased the song as a gift to fans earlier last week, causing waves of excitement to rush through social media. After all, it is Carpenter’s first solo single since her holiday EP fruitcake, released at the end of 2023. People were on the edge of their seats, and rightfully so. The hype resulted in her biggest Spotify debut to date, with 3.67 million streams on the first day. Carpenter continues to hit career milestones with her unique songwriting, most notably with “Feather,” which went platinum and held #1 on the top 40 radio spot for two consecutive weeks.
“Espresso” charms listeners with its funky and summery pop instrumentals, produced by Julian Bunetta and co-written with Amy Allen and Steph Jones. The track features bright guitar riffs, glistening synths, and airy layered harmonies. Carpenter describes her irresistibility with a sense of humor, comparing herself to a fresh shot of espresso that her lover cannot get enough of. She’s exciting, spontaneous, and sweet (she guesses so).
Too bad your ex don’t do it for ya
Walked in and dream-came-trued it for ya
Soft skin and I perfumed it for ya
Sabrina Carpenter, “Espresso”
Carpenter’s journey as a musician and as a young woman navigating life continues to evolve, as one fan on X highlighted, drawing comparisons between lyrics from her previous album and those of “Espresso.”
The music video, filmed by experienced director Dave Meyers, exudes vintage vibes. It whisks away the viewer into a seaside romance, bathed in a warm yellow hue similar to a coffee stain. Carpenter incorporates 1950s cat eye sunglasses and swimwear, adding a fun feminine touch.
“Espresso” is the first single off what fans suspect is an upcoming summer album. In the last 3 seconds of the music video, an old car speaker plays a similar melody; possibly a teaser for the next single?
Take a sip of “Espresso” on Spotify and Apple Music.
