Rook Monroe’s new album hits like a sharp blast of cold air that wakes you on impact. “SLIM.” is the kind of EP that resists definition; naming it would only restrict it. It moves on its own terms, ignoring genre limits and stepping confidently into every space it wants to explore.
The journey opens with “i don’t wanna be you.,” a track that blends irreverence, punk energy, and personal lyricism. Rook takes a 2000s pop-punk classic and rebuilds it from the ground up. It’s the first sign that this EP is here to dismantle influences, echoing the momentum he’s carried since standout moments like 2024’s “L’Eggo MY EGO.”
“Brrrt” arrives with an explosion of personality. It’s raw, straightforward rap with a hook that lingers, accompanied by two distinct video versions that expand his visual world. On the opposite end is “Fever,” a track where Rook slows the pace and lets the psychedelic textures take over, offering a quiet pause within the chaos.
One of the EP’s brightest tracks is “Mugshot,” a previously unheard, nocturnal synth-pop track that drifts with the ease of a late-night drive yet hides an uncomfortable reflection on image, pressure, and authenticity. Between shimmering keys and a galactic groove, Rook raises questions about public exposure that feel more intimate than they appear.
Near the end, “Space Freaks 3” and “kaleidoscope” complete the puzzle. Both push genre-blending to its edge and show how easily Rook shifts from soft melodies to sharp lines, from pop references to deeper reflections, without losing coherence, a proof of the fluidity that holds the eight tracks together.
The EP, released via Blueprint/Warner Records, closes with the line, “Life is messy, I got this kaleidoscope I see it through,” a fitting declaration for an artist who turns chaos into music with disarming clarity.
With collaborations spanning Rihanna, The Chainsmokers, and Aminé, Rook Monroe could have taken a predictable path. Instead, “SLIM.” shows he chose the opposite. With over 29M global streams already accumulated, he moves like an artist who’s no longer trying to fit anywhere but carving out a space that looks like nothing else.
