Rod Coote’s Romantic Idea of Living By The “Oceanside”
Many people want to get away from where they grew up and explore the world. Although Rod Coote’s new single, “Oceanside,” isn’t about traveling the world, it portrays simply wanting to move outside of his in the romantic notion of moving from the countryside to a little house by the ocean.

Fans of Bon Iver and Hollow Coves will enjoy Coote’s latest track. The Australian singer continues developing his dreamy, atmospheric indie-folk sound in “Oceanside,” with his warm vocals evoking a sense of hopefulness and optimism. Alongside his expressive vocals, Coote incorporates beautiful harmonies and earnest lyrics with the acoustic guitar.
Coote discusses the personal meaning behind “Oceanside,”
“’Oceanside’ explores the feeling of moving from the countryside to a house by the ocean. After reading the Ernest Hemingway novel ‘Old Man and the Sea,’ I felt inspired about the romanticised life of someone living by the ocean and how their whole life revolves around this from sunrise to sunset. Growing up in the Australian countryside, the closest beach was 5 hours away and as a kid I would always dream about living by the ocean one day.”
The lyrics tell this story through descriptive imagery and literary devices such as similes and metaphors. The first verse sets the scene: “One moon soon we’ll cross those rolling hills/ And leave behind all those familiar fields/ Lock the door / Let’s lose the keys and spill our hearts/ Until we’re nearing the edge/ And time stands still.” The chorus contains many references to the sea, especially in the last few lines, “I found a compass in your eyes/ Navigate us through the night/ Drifting under the moonlight.” The song’s final verse showcases the passage of time and growing old together as they “Watch the sand as it washes into the sea/ Sinking deep/ As I hold you close/ Next to me.” The storytelling elements of “Oceanside,” combined with a compelling blend of acoustic guitar and soothing beats, create an atmosphere that captures the hopeful optimism of planning for dreams of the future.
Rod Coote began his musical journey in 2019 with the release of his debut single, “Lighthouse,” followed by “Hibernate,” and his debut EP, Golden Hour. Coote released more singles in 2020 and 2021, but his career picked up in 2022 as he spent the year recording his EP New England and collaborating with artists like Garrett Kato and Hein Cooper, as well as producer Jackson Barclay. After his EP, Coote released “Light In Me,” a collaboration with the Canadian singer-songwriter Laura Lucas.
