Miya Zawa’s recent release has us swooning. Her new single “Like Damn (whoa)” is the anthem for all things yearning. It’s mellow yet bouncy, a masterclass in indie-pop production. It’s the epitome of hearts fluttering and butterflies in your stomach.

From being skeptical about new relationships to full-blown obsession (“She got it so good, I’m like damn WHOA!”), this track captures the intensity of a fresh new infatuation.

I was looking for a love like my last, which had all the intensity of teenage feelings. I didn’t want to settle for a mediocre relationship, and I never understood why people were settling. At the start of the song, I’m questioning relationships and hesitating to be a part of them.

Then the chorus marks meeting someone who changes all that, and shifts the way I’ve looked at things. By the second verse, I’m in it. It’s sparkly and new, but I also know that there’s ups and downs. This is an ultimate dream crush song. I never actually had this crush, it was more of a manifestation at the time. Manifesting the kind of feelings I dreamed of. It worked btw!

Miya Zawa blends pop, dub, and folksy influences for a truly immersive listen, the perfect packaging for all things about human emotion. And, A hazy, home video-style gives an intimate feeling of dancing around your room or confiding in your friend:

Miya Zawa has traveled near and far to make music like this, spanning Canberra, Wagga Wagga, Sydney, and Tokyo. These international influences shine through in her production.

We love to add fun and silly things into the production. I used to go to the arcades and play a classic Japanese arcade game, Taiko no Tatsujin, which is like the equivalent of Guitar Hero for Taiko (traditional Japanese drums). We’ve taken that as inspiration and added Taiko in the chorus.
