Malick Koly Is More Than a Drummer

Malick Koly continues to develop his music with his newest single, “Eaux Rouges.” Koly is a drummer turned music student turned singer-songwriter. With each song, he captures his experiences of transformation and self-discovery as he makes his name in the folk-rock genre.

The song starts with an electric guitar, strumming in a crescendo. It quickly transforms into rock but balances a sound that isn’t too heavy or too soft. Meanwhile, the lyrics are repetitive, as Koly chants the words like a motto. All the elements come together and form a sense of steadiness throughout.

I’ll tell you how it goes, here we go

Don’t wanna say goodbye, want you to stay the night

I don’t wanna say goodbye, want you to stay the night

I don’t wanna say goodbye, want you to stay the night

– “Eaux Rouges”

“Eaux Rouges” translates to red waters in French, but its meaning is potentially more figurative than literal. It could have something to do with the color and the image it evokes— intensity, love, passion. The vagueness of the expression allows listeners to associate the title with anything that resonates with their experiences.

The song achieves a mood more than anything, conveying through rhythm and melody rather than words. Listeners will be able to let loose and sway, without thinking too hard about what it all means.

“Eaux Rouges” was executively produced by Steve Jordan, known to also be Koly’s mentor. Jordan is known for his drumming credits for Rolling Stones, SNL and Late Night with David Letterman bands.

Malick gave me a call and asked me if I would participate, and there it was. It’s got a lot of potential, it’s interesting & different. Refreshing, and that’s why I am a part of this.

Malick Koly is only getting started. In July, he’s set to perform at New York City’s Cutting Room. This comes just ahead of his EP release, Feel Bad Fest, dropping on August 18. The released tracklist shares two new songs. Make sure to stay updated with the artist on Instagram and check out “Dolòr” and “Heaven For Now” on Spotify.
