Kimbra returns with ethereal music video for “Save Me”
New Zealand popstar Kimbra released the music video for her latest single,” Save Me”, an emotional and heartfelt ballad about anxiety and self-doubt on Oct.20. This is the first single that the singer songwriter has released this year, and the first from her upcoming album, A Reckoning, which is set to be released on January 27th of next year via Inertia.
Kimbra’s music can be described as a fusion of pop with R&B, jazz, rock and electronic elements. Her musical influences include the likes of Prince, Outkast and Bjork. She rose to fame by featuring on Gotye’s megahit “Somebody That I Used to Know.” The song would earn Kimbra her two Grammys. Top the billboard 100 and reach a whopping 1.9 billion views on YouTube. She has also won seven New Zealand Music Awards and 4 ARIA Music Awards.
“Save Me” sees Kimbra wrestle with her inner demons. The instrumentation contains gorgeous yet at times, unsettling piano. Kimbra’s voice can be heard trembling at times, as if the struggle of talking about the subject matter is too much for her. The song talks about the depressive states that we are all at risk of falling into. Kimbra tells us how much she fears slipping into one of those episodes as soon as she is left alone with her own thoughts. She repeatedly talks about how she no longer wants to be alone and repeatedly asks for someone to come and save her from herself.
The music video for “Save Me” is shot in Iceland. We follow Kimbra across picturesque mountains, valleys and waterfalls. We see several close ups of Kimbra’s face, which really help to highlight her battle against her struggles. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking and definitely heightens the beautiful piano and Kimbra’s vocals. About the music video, Kimbra said
“We shot in the month of June 2021. Mornings were cold and icy, the wind cut like razors… but i felt like a true warrior marching across that blistered earth, with black sands underneath me + those hovering cliffs towering above me. I was reminded of those who first walked these environments, what were they thinking when they saw this new world?”
