Today, London-based singer, songwriter and producer Garvie dropped his first single of the year, “Boring.” Don’t let the title fool you, though, because “Boring” is anything but.

The newest addition to Garvie’s repertoire of OTT DIY N64-tinged pop bangers, “Boring” is a high-energy indie pop stomper that celebrates everyone’s boring—or “vanilla”—side.

About the release, Garvie shares:

“There’s always that person at a party that you don’t want to get stuck chatting to, and sometimes think it might be me. I was always told that if you’re bored, then you’re boring – so when you’re telling a dull story, you’re bringing everyone else down too. It’s almost infectious, which is the idea that birthed a lot of these lyrics – that and What We Do In The Shadows, obviously.”

Garvie

Though being boring may be something we secretly worry about, Garvie’s tongue in cheek lyrics cleverly poke fun at how infectious it makes us. Singing in first-person, Garvie depicts himself as an energy-thirsty vampire who feeds on people’s boredom. He preys on his victims by telling them stories until their eyelids drop, at which point he invites them down to his coffin.

As he drains the energy of those he bores, Garvie questions how he became perceived as boring, delving into his own insecurity and tapping into a feeling that many of us may relate to.

Talking but no-one’s listening

Oh god, how’d I get boring?

Beyond its lyrical depth, “Boring” stands out because of the hyperactive and irreverent charm Garvie produced it with. As a searing chromatic guitar riff leads the charge in the chorus, Game Boy-style synths soak the soundscape, creating a fun and vibrant backdrop for Garvie’s irresistibly catchy melodies.
