There’s this iconic song from George Benson (1977) which was then sung by Whitney Houston (1986) entitled ‘The Greatest Love Of All’. In it we hear the beautiful words “Learning to love yourself. It is the greatest love of all.”. Yet despite having this stellar status and garnering world admiration, the sad reality is that it’s message of self love has been lost in translation. Not to blame the gentle souls who brought it to life, all fingers should be pointed at us. Due to the humdrums of life and living in the fast lane, this caused us to drop everything including ourselves to make ends meet. There’s no denying that existing on this planet is the equivalent of the Netflix adaption of ‘Dark Souls’ and grinding is necessary but come on now. That shouldn’t stop us from saving room for ourselves; a time to appreciate, and rest our weary heads. Ultimately giving us a window of opportunity to heal in preparation for our forthcoming challenges.
This same spirit of choosing ourselves first can be felt in LA singer -songwriter Michael Isaak’s song ‘Hey Boy’. Released last November 17th in all major streaming platforms. Michael Isaak’s latest offering is an affectionate love letter to his younger self. From a heart filled with longing and gratitude, we see the artist find peace in knowing that the ‘boy’ despite his shortcomings did his best to weather all the storms that blew his way. He might have known too little about the world he moved in, but his sheer determination pulled him through. It’s a confession of love and devotion like a lover would, but for one’s self.
With vocals so serene and instrumentals that take us to a restful paradise, Michael Isaak through his track ‘Hey Boy’ allows us to see for ourselves that self love is beautiful. Through it’s intricate beats and rhythms, we are reminded that this isn’t merely a fad that this current generation conjured up. It’s actually one of the ways in order to live a life that’s filled with love. In that same breathe, it also leaves us with a thought we could all ponder on: “How could you love others if you can’t love yourself first?”
