Araya Charles Opens Up About Her Journey With Depression In “Oizy’s Curse”

Some songs tell exciting stories and explore intriguing themes through their lyrics, utilizing more stripped-down instrumentals to emphasize these messages. That is the case with Araya Charles’ second single, “Oizy’s Curse.”

“Oizy’s Curse” is about Araya Charles’ experience with depression, and she takes the listener alongside her through the melancholic soundscape of the track. The song’s title refers to Nyx’s daughter, Oizy, the Greek Goddess of grief, anxiety, and depression. Oizy is a lesser-known goddess who didn’t cultivate a large following due to the fear that she is an evil spirit meant to harm humanity.

The lyrics tell of fighting against the negative thoughts and voices that can run rampant in one’s mind, which become worse as night falls. The first verse describes, “I’ve looked the devil in the eye/ Far too many times/ It’s in the whispers of the night/ Here to trick your mind/ With poison words.” Following the end of the first verse, a chorus of harmonies hits to create a dreamy atmosphere further, eventually joined in by a deep hum in the background. Aside from this deep vibrating hum, the instrumental is mainly guitar and string instruments, coupled with Charles’ vocals and harmonies.

Overall, “Oizy’s Curse” is an intriguing exploration of darker and more negative mental and emotional states such as grief, anxiety, and depression. The simplicity of the instrumental places the focus on Charles’ haunting lyrics and vocal performance. Almost like something that can be described as nightmare pop versus dream pop, as the artist takes the listener on a journey through these dark emotions.

Originally from London, Araya Charles is an up-and-coming artist currently stationed in Paris. Her songs feature strong storytelling elements, reflecting Charles’ musical inspirations, such as Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish, and Ben Howard. Aside from “Oizy’s Curse,” Charles released her first single, “Brother,” earlier this year. To stay up to date on Araya Charles and her music, follow her on Instagram and TikTok
