After rescheduling the North American leg of their tour, K-pop quartet AB6IX returned to the U.S. this month for their “2023 AB6IX WORLD TOUR [THE FUTURE] in USA.” The tour marked the group’s first U.S. concert tour and included a San Francisco stop Nov. 11 where we joined members Woong, Donghyun, Woojin and Daehwi during their show at Gray Area, an intimate theater in Mission District.
Leading up to the start of the show, the inside of the theater glowed red as fans, collectively known as ABNEW, lit up the room with their AB6IX lightsticks. One by one, ABNEW got up from their seated positions and began to sing and dance along to “THE ANSWER” as a warmup.
Triumphant introduction music then engulfed the sound system and screams and cheers pierced the air as the AB6IX members walked on stage.
The group started the show with powerful performances of “Resonance” and “LOSER.” This show marked the members’ first time in San Francisco and Bay Area ABNEW were nothing short of thrilled to finally see them perform.
The night was filled with performances of tracks ranging from fun pop hits like “BLAZE” to emotional ballads like “NOTHING WITHOUT YOU,” which highlighted the diversity of AB6IX’s discography. The members pulled off impressive choreography while maintaining stable vocals and smooth rap flows that sounded even better than they do in studio recordings.
Many songs featured Daehwi’s angelic ad libs, which soared above the backing tracks and made for a standout impression of his vocal abilities. And, a personal favorite performance of the night was “RED UP,” a hip-hop influenced track featuring horn-led instrumentals in the chorus. During this performance, the members danced with a natural ease and swag not found during other songs.
An additional highlight of the night was their encore during which they looped their track, “1, 2, 3.” This song got the crowd dancing and singing along like no other. Every single person was on their feet, sharing the positive energy projected by the members.
Between songs, the AB6IX members took several moments to interact with the audience. Their naturally charming and sweet personalities allowed them to chat and joke around with ABNEW as if they were the best of friends. Near the end of the show, ABNEW gifted the members two California flags filled with handwritten messages that shared words of love, encouragement and gratitude. Staff then took a group photo of the members and the audience so everyone can remember the beautiful experience shared by AB6IX and ABNEW that night.
