1. Fredrik Svabø, thea wang: “Sophie”
Norweigan artist Fredrik Svabø joins thea wang for his new single, “Sophie.” This indie-jazz track has a gentle, enveloping aura that is perfect to play at calmer times of the day. The brass is rounded and soft, lifted by the bed of sizzling cymbals that give a watery “whooshing” effect. A pedal steel guitar seals the harmony of the track.
2. Roniit, Tahüm: “Hypnotized”
Self-proclaimed dark pop sorceress Roniit collabs with electronic artist Tahüm for “Hypnotized.” The soundscape is heavy with tension; the bass stretches to satisfying depths, enhancing some of the more robotic sounds up top. The main vocal line is layered with soft harmonies, followed by traveling adlibs which amplify the track’s surrealness.
3. Rose Gray: “Party People”
UK-based artist Rose Gray makes waves with her new release, “Party People.” This dance-house track invokes a youthful dreaminess that makes time disappear. Gray’s vocals are equally vibrant and sensual, meshing wonderfully with the instrumental’s balminess. Produced by Sega Bodega, this release is sure to play in clubs everywhere.
4. Beach Fossils: “Inside Out”
New York’s very own Beach Fossils return with “Inside Out.” This short track recites a poem about vulnerability, describing a feeling of falling apart at the hands of someone stunning. The band’s signature coastal guitar proves to be evergreen, adjustable to any story, any season. The dry, close-mic’d vocal production stands out the most.
5. Felicia Lu: “We’re All Gonna Die”
Austrian singer-songwriter Felicia Lu came back with “We’re All Gonna Die.” Both euphoric and existential, the track explores themes of mortality in a lighthearted way. The subdued, atmospheric garage beat acts as the perfect backdrop, easing the worries of the listener. Lu sings with optimistic sincerity, “your doubts are a waste of time.”
